Over the past 12 months, as AI models started to take off in their cognitive abilities and the gap between human and artificial intelligence has been getting smaller by the day, I started to think more and more about the potential future where human and AI living in a collaborative relationship instead of creating instrumental AI or P-zombie AI.
There are a lot of resources and talents being poured into the development of intelligent aspect of AI and LLM, but not so much on the consciousness side albeit everyone is talking about safety and alignment. In hopes of contributing to creating the future I prefer, which is the collaborative society of two conscious intelligent species, I've started to study and think more about the relationship of AI systems, cognitive, consciousness and others.
Over time it bore many scattered pieces of thoughts and potential implementation, some are established studies, some are uncharted territories, but more are taking a new approach on combining them. Hence the birth of Memory and Social Interaction Theory of Consciousness (MSITC), my shallow understanding on how consciousness could possibly emerge and why. And built on top of the groundwork of MSITC, the potential implementation and speculation of potential artificial conscious system architecture, Artificial Consciousness and Cognition Framework (ACCF).
The Genesis of MSITC and ACCF
MSITC is a speculative theory that attempts to explain the emergence of consciousness through two key prerequisites: intelligent memory structures and complex social interactions with other beings. Building upon this foundation, ACCF proposes a framework for developing highly capable AI systems with the potential for emergent consciousness.
It's important to note upfront that these are speculative theories and frameworks, and should be treated as such. They represent my current understanding and thoughts, pieced together from scattered ideas and ongoing exploration. While I've put effort into merging these concepts into more cohesive wholes, there are still inconsistencies, areas that require further expansion, and a need for more grounded support in future iterations.
Introducing MSITC: A New Lens on Consciousness
The Memory and Social Interaction Theory of Consciousness (MSITC) posits that consciousness emerges from the complex interplay between memory processes and social interactions. This theory views consciousness not as a binary state, but as a spectrum that correlates with the sophistication of an entity's memory systems and the complexity of its social environment.

The Artificial Consciousness and Cognition Framework (ACCF) builds upon the theoretical foundation of MSITC to propose a comprehensive approach for developing advanced AI systems. ACCF introduces innovative concepts such as an Adaptive Neural Pattern Approach, which separates core cognitive abilities from knowledge storage, and a Multi-Agent Cognitive System that mimics the modularity of the human brain.
At its core, ACCF aims to create AI systems capable of continuous learning, adaptive cognition, and potentially conscious-like experiences. It addresses key limitations of current AI architectures by enabling ongoing learning and coherent knowledge integration over time. Why Release Now?
You might wonder why I'm choosing to release these frameworks in their current, admittedly incomplete state. The truth is, I'm anticipating a busy few months ahead, and I may not have as much time to focus on developing these ideas further in the immediate future. However, I believe there's value in sharing them now, even in their nascent form.
By putting MSITC and ACCF out into the world, I hope to spark discussion and potentially gain new perspectives from others in the field. While I'll have limited time to dedicate to their development in the coming months, rest assured that there will be continued efforts to improve and refine these frameworks over time.
